Assessments

Safeguarding our environment, heritage and landscape

Protecting the local environment

Rigorous environmental, archaeological and landscape assessments are planned to ensure a best-in-class solar farm. BNRG Shessy, alongside leading environmental consultants TOBIN, will conduct a suite of environmental assessments and surveys which will inform the design of the solar farm.

The assessments will include:

  • Population and human health

  • Biodiversity and ecology

  • Landscape and visual

  • Land soil and geology

  • Water

  • Air quality

  • Noise and vibration

Baseline surveys and detailed modelling will be carried out where necessary.

Industry-leading environmental conservation
Protecting local wildlife

Extensive ecological surveys will inform buffer zones to protect natural habitats and include set back from springs, streams and hedgerows.

The surveys will assess potential effects on local wildlife, including birds, bats and mammals. Hedgerows and planting will provide shelter and ensure a wildlife corridor and pathway will be protected.

Preserving biodiversity

A Biodiversity Enhancement Management Plan will be promote ecology and protect natural assets in the local area. Specialist surveys are being conducted to assess the presence or absence of bat species and their roosts, including the Lesser Horseshoe Bat, and these will be undertaken during the optimum summer months.

There will be a focus on protecting flora and fauna.

Respecting local heritage

BNRG Shessy has a dedicated focus on preserving local heritage and is working closely with leading experts to ensure the rich history of South-East Galway is protected.

The Archaeological Impact Assessment will survey historical sites of interest and include a detailed study of the archaeological and historical background of the site and surrounding area. This will include:

  • in-depth research

  • a geographical and topographic survey

  • targeted archaeological test trenching

Expert consultants on site

Specialist archaeological experts will conduct a number of surveys and assessments, including a Cultural Heritage Report. Generous buffers to exclude development will be placed around archaeological sites of interest based on the National Monuments Service Zones of Notification.

All activity will be completed in line with archaeological, architectural and heritage guidelines to the highest standards of professional best practice.

Archaeological sources will include:

  • Cartographic and written sources relating to the area

  • Record of Monuments and Places

  • Record of Protected Structures

  • National Inventory of Archaeological Heritage

  • Topographical files of the National Museum of Ireland

  • Galway County Development Plan

Archaeological testing of the site will be carried out pre-construction and an archaeologist will also be present during construction if required.

Landscape and visual

A Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, a Glint and Glare Assessment, a Traffic and Transport Assessment, and a Landscape Management Plan will also be submitted as part of the application process.

Traffic

Traffic mitigation measures will ensure little disruption with a Traffic Management Plan finalised prior to construction. Access to local houses, farms and businesses will be maintained at all times during the build.

Prior to construction, a full assessment of existing road infrastructure will be conducted and analyse traffic movement, identify road upgrades where necessary, and confirm safe site lines at all entrances.
